LWC Offers Free Classes To Area Senior Citizens

Posted on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 [5:46 PM]

COLUMBIA, Ky. --  Area senior citizens can learn Japanese, how to direct a play, explore women's studies and study the Old Testament this fall at Lindsey Wilson College.

And the cost of the courses is perfect for the pocketbook -- free.

As part of the LWC Senior Scholars Program, area citizens who are 62 years or older may take one undergraduate class this fall at no tuition expense. Senior Scholars must pay for books and supplies for their class.

The Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees created the Senior Scholars program as a way to show the college's appreciation to the region's senior citizens.

"I am very pleased that Lindsey Wilson offers college classes at no cost to area senior citizens," said LWC Vice President for Academic Affairs Bettie Starr. "One of the values that we cherish is the importance of lifelong learning for everyone. Seniors in college classes provide wonderful models for traditional students.

"As Henry Ford said, 'Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.' These courses help area residents keep their mind young while exposing them to some outstanding professors."

LWC's fall semester begins Aug. 17.
