8 Honored at Homecoming 2013

Posted on Sunday, September 29, 2013 [12:11 AM]

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College community honored five alumni and three longtime friends and crowned a new queen and king at the college's 82nd Homecoming Weekend, held Friday and Saturday.

"I want you to know how grateful Elise and I are for the opportunity to serve Lindsey Wilson College," LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. told more than 200 people at Saturday's Homecoming Awards Brunch. "I hope you will realize what a special place this is and how blessed you are that Lindsey Wilson College and the people you have encountered here have been in your life."

At the Homecoming Alumni Brunch on Saturday, the Lindsey Wilson National Alumni Association honored three alumni and three college friends:

* Greg Hall of the Class of 1982, a Tompkinsville, Ky., native and current resident of San Diego received the Distinguished Service Award;

* Glasgow, Ky., resident Brian Shirley of the Class of 1998 received the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award;

* the late Columbia resident Jean McLean of the Class of 1949 was honored posthumously with the Distinguished Service Award;

* and three individuals were named honorary Lindsey Wilson alumni: B.J. Burnett of Lexington, Ky., who has been a member of the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees for more than 25 years; and LWC Associate Professor of Music Gerald Chafin and his wife, Sonja, both of Columbia.

"This is always my favorite part of the weekend," said LWC Director of Alumni Relations Randy Burns. "It's was such a great time because old friends got together, and we also honored some truly outstanding and wonderful people -- people who are responsible for Lindsey Wilson being what it is today."

Before Saturday's LWC-Faulkner (Ala.) University football game at Blue Raider Stadium, two  former Blue Raider basketball players were inducted into the Lindsey Wilson Athletic Hall of Fame: Shelia Isenberg McGeorge of the Class of 1990 and Joe McGeorge of the Class of 1994, both of whom are from Tompkinsville, Ky.

"It's kind of neat the fact that it was the first husband and wife going into the Hall of Fame," said LWC Sports Information Director Chris Wells. "They were outstanding student-athletes and great role models for our youth throughout their entire careers at Lindsey Wilson and beyond. … They are great ambassadors for not just the sport that they love -- basketball -- but for Lindsey Wilson College as well."

Throughout the weekend, reunions were held for the classes of 1964, 1973, 1983, 1993 and 2003; former members of the Lindsey Wilson Singers, Bonner Scholars; and members of the Golden Alumni Society.

During halftime of the football game Dariann Smith of Columbia was crowned homecoming queen and Alexander Giergen of Dusseldorf, Germany, was crowned homecoming king. Smith represented the LWC Bonner Scholars Program, and Giergen represented the basketball program.
