Eight to be Honored Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at 85th Homecoming Weekend

Posted on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 [1:39 PM]

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Six alumni and two longtime friends of the college will be honored at Lindsey Wilson College's 85th homecoming weekend, to be held Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

The weekend will also feature several reunions, including reunions of the college's cycling and baseball alumni.

"We are looking forward to what we believe will be the best Lindsey Wilson homecoming celebration ever," said LWC Director of Alumni Relations Randy Burns. "We have programs and activities planned that will appeal to a broad range of people."

This year's LWC homecoming will also feature a dedication ceremony for the victory bell tower newly constructed on the campus quadrangle.

The original victory bell hung in the L.R. McDonald Administration Building until the early 1970s and was rung after each victory in basketball, the only sport at the time. The same historic bell has been relocated to a 30-foot-tall tower at the center of campus.

"Students would race back to campus to be the first to ring the bell," said Burns. "We want the current students to decide the new traditions for the victory bell. The alumni office and LWC administration will work with student government to make that happen."

At the Alumni Awards & Athletic Hall of Fame Celebration, two alumni will be inducted into the LWC Athletic Hall of Fame and six individuals will be honored by the LWC National Alumni Association. The event will be held at 11 a.m. CT Saturday, Oct. 1, in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center, 430 Helen Flatt Drive.

The new members of the LWC Athletic Hall of Fame are: former cyclists Jeni South '04 Huff and Joe Haley '02. Huff and Haley's inductions coincide with the 20th anniversary of cycling as an intercollegiate sport at LWC.

The LWC National Alumni Association will honor four alumni and two longtime friends of LWC.

The four alumni:

* Dr. S. Ross Martin '05 of Oklahoma City, Okla., will receive the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award;

* Dr. April Richardson-Hatcher '02 of Lexington, Ky., will receive the Outstanding Young Alumna Award;

* J. Paul Long '75 of Stanford, Ky., will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award;

• and Amy Thompson-Wells '99 of Columbia, Ky., will receive the Distinguished Service Award for almost two decades of service to LWC.

The two longtime friends:

* Longtime LWC supporter Evlyn Komosa of Columbia, Ky., will be named an honorary alumna;

* and LWC Professor of Business Dr. Mohammad Pourheydarian Campbellsville, Ky., who has been a member of the LWC faculty since 1990, will be named an honorary alumnus.

This will be the fourth year the LWC National Alumni Association and LWC Athletic Department have combined their annual awards ceremony.

"The addition of the athletics hall of fame inductions to the homecoming program has been a natural fit. It has quickly become a celebrated tradition the Lindsey Wilson community looks forward to with a great amount of pride."

Another big part of homecoming weekend will be the 35th anniversary celebration and reunion of LWC baseball program. The festivities will include a home run derby on Saturday afternoon at Egnew Park - Lindsey Wilson Sports Park, 820 Hanley Lane.

The weekend will conclude with the  LWC-Union (Ky.) College football game -- which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CT at Blue Raider Stadium, 828 Russell Road.

"It's always great to have everyone back on campus -- to both see the incredible changes that have taken place as well as catch up with old friends," Burns said. "This weekend will be a wonderful celebration of old and new traditions, friends and alumni, and the Blue Raider spirit."
