Earth Day Celebration to Include Concert by Boatmen, 5K Run/Walk

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- A 5K run/walk and a free concert will headline this year's Earth Day celebrations at Lindsey Wilson College.

The official Earth Day celebration is on April 22, but because that date conflicts with the Easter holiday weekend, the LWC community will celebrate Earth Day 2011 on Wednesday, April 20.

"We have a full day of activities designed to bring awareness to Earth Day 2011 and toward more responsible stewardship of the environment and community," said LWC Coordinator of Community Based Learning Norm Miller.

The highlights of LWC's Earth Day events include the inaugural LWC Earth Day 5K Run/Walk at 4 p.m. CT, followed by a concert featuring The Boatmen.

The 5K run/walk will begin at 4 p.m. CT at the Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center, 399 Williams St. There is no entry fee, and the top three male and female finishers will receive congratulatory medals. The course will take participants through Columbia, ending at the LWC Campus Quadrangle.

The Boatmen concert will begin at 4:30 p.m. CT on the Campus Quadrangle. The concert is free and open to the public. The concert will also include samples of Kentucky Proud food products, along with complimentary hamburgers, chips and beverages.

A four-part harmony-driven group from West Virginia, the Boatmen have shared the stage with such notable acts as STYX, Perpetual Groove, Larry Keel & Natural Bridge, Keller Williams and Afroman. The group is scheduled to perform at this summer's FloydFest X lineup. FloydFest is one of the top music festivals in the country.

Other 2011 Earth Day activities planned at LWC include:

* campus beautification projects;

* recycling projects;

* T-shirt making for children at Center for Courageous Kids;

* and card mailing for residents of Summit Manor Nursing Home.
