Lindsey Wilson College Events Planned To Raise Awareness About Sexual Violence and Prevention

Posted on Thursday, April 06, 2017 [1:13 PM]

COLUMBIA, KY. -- Students, faculty and staff of Lindsey Wilson College were encouraged to wear the color teal on Wednesday to show solidarity for victims of sexual assault. April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and Lindsey Wilson College will host a series of programs to raise public awareness of sexual violence.

Every Thursday evening during the month of April, LWC will offer self-defense classes. The classes will begin at 7 p.m. CT and held in the Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center, 388 Williams Street. The classes are free to all members of the Holloway Wellness Center, as well as students, faculty and staff of LWC. Non-members can take part for a small fee.

The Women's Studies Conference, an annual spring academic conference, will showcase more than two dozen students presenting papers on a wide range of women's issues including equality, social justice and violence. The conference will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT on April 7 in the W.W. Slider Humanities Center, Room 300, 155 Blue Raider Drive. The conference will conclude around 4:30 p.m. CT.

On April 18, the college will host its sixth-annual "Take Back the Night." The purpose of the event is to encourage the LWC campus community to take a stand against sexual violence and honor the victims.

LWC student activities director, Lafawn Nettles says "Take Back the Night" has become an important and informative campus tradition.

"It is essential for us to make our students aware of sexual violence and prevention. College students are at the highest risk for being sexually assaulted. We want to do everything we can to provide the education necessary to protect everyone," said Nettles.

"Take Back the Night" participants will have an opportunity to tie-dye a shirt in teal, the color of sexual assault awareness, beginning at 3 p.m. CT on the campus quadrangle; and dinner will be provided at 5 p.m. CT. The awareness march on the A.P. White campus, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, will take place after the dinner.

On April 19, the LWC Women and Violence class will present a discussion about the Title IX federal law and sexual violence on college campuses. The talk, which is a part of the "Women's Brown Bag Lunch" series, will begin at 12:30 p.m. CT in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center board room.

A balloon release in show of solidarity for victims of sexual assault will conclude the month of Lindsey Wilson activities. The release will take place at 10:50 a.m. CT on April 26 on the campus quadrangle.

The events, unless otherwise noted, are free and open to the public. For more information contact Student Activities Director, Lafawn Nettles at or call 270-384-8033.
