'Gospel of Mark' to be Performed Sept. 29-30

Gospel of Mark

Assistant Professor of Theatre Robert Brock will present Gospel of Mark Sept. 29-30.

The Gospel of Mark will literally come to life at Lindsey Wilson College.

The Gospel of Mark will be performed by LWC Assistant Professor of Theatre Robert Brock Sept. 29-30 at V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson St. Brock will perform the entire gospel, word for word.

"The thing that's hard to get across to some people is how dramatic this gospel is," Brock said. "When you tell someone that you are going to perform of the Gospel of Mark, it sounds like someone up there on the stage repeating the whole Gospel, which would be really boring. But it's far from that. After I have done these shows, people have said, 'It brought the scriptures to life in a way I didn't know it could.'"

In the performance Gospel of Mark, Brock recreates the book as a storyteller, which is how early Christians were exposed to the work during an age when printing was prohibitively expensive and most people were illiterate.

"If you think of the Gospel, it's a story that is told by a storyteller, and that's what I bring to life -- the storyteller," Brock said. "There is so much drama in the Gospel and so many interesting events. Mark just rolls along and moves this story. It comes to life."

Brock got the idea to perform an entire book from the New Testament about seven years ago when he saw an actor perform the Gospel of Mark. Brock then studied and performed the Gospel of John, followed by the Book of Revelation before focusing on the Gospel of Mark.

"All of them have been life-changing, to get that close to scripture," Brock said. "When you memorize something, it becomes alive in a way that reading it never can. It's been a real powerful experience."

Robert Brock will perform Gospel of Mark  at 2 p.m. CT Sunday, Sept. 29, and at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in the Lindsey Wilson College V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson St. For more, contact Brock at or (270) 590-4803.
