COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The eclectic sounds of world music will be
featured at a Friday night concert at Lindsey Wilson College.
Stirfry will perform at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday, March 26, in the
W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall. The concert -- which is
part of the 2009-10 Lindsey Wilson College Cultural Affairs Series
-- is free and open to the public.
Stirfry is a Gypsy jazz band of violin, accordion, guitar,
mandolin, percussion and kazoo. Based in Frankfort, Ky., the band
features Joanna Hay, Jeff Ellis, Ben Griffith and Bill May. The
band's name comes from the fact that it plays a "stirfry" of Gypsy,
Latin and jazz and Celtic -- with originals thrown in to spice
things up.
"This group will surprise and delight its audience with its varied
repertoire," said LWC Library Director Phil Hanna, who is also
chair of the LWC Cultural Affairs Series. "The band's performances
are filled with joy and laughter. A typical performance might start
with a Celtic air and a jig, followed by an Eastern European
czardas, a jazz cover, some Latin grooves and Stirfry
originals."
