COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College
Theatre Program will present the award-winning play The
Diviners Oct. 30-Nov. 1 and Nov. 3.
The play, which will be directed by LWC Assistant
Professor of Theatre Robert Brock, will be performed at the
college's V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson St.
Set in the fictional town of Zion, Ind., during the Great
Depression, The Diviners is about a mentally-challenged
boy Buddy Layman and a stranger C.C. Showers who passes through
Zion. Written by Jim Leonard Jr., then a professor at Hanover
(Ind.) College, The Diviners was named best new play in
the 1980 American College Theatre Festival.
Brock saw The Diviners when it was first
produced, and he said "I was so moved by it back then."
The friendship forged between the Buddy -- who has an
ability to find, or divine, water for farmers -- and C.C., a failed
preacher from Hazard, Ky., is central to The Diviners.
Buddy is afraid of water because his mother drowned when he was
younger, and C.C. helps Buddy overcome his fear.
"That friendship really turns into something important
for both of them," Brock said. "There are a lot of interesting
characters that live in this town. … It's a really, really
well-written play. It's got a lot of humor in it. These are
down-to-earth characters everyone knows."
Robert said Buddy is one of his favorite characters in
modern American theater.
"I think he's one of the great characters written in
modern drama," Brock said. "You would say probably now he's
autistic, maybe autistic savant for his connection to water, being
able to find it and all."
Robert said area residents should be able to relate to a
lot of the characters and the play's setting.
"Even though it's set in Indiana, it feels like
small-town Kentucky," Brock. "There's very little distance in
feeling a relation to these people."
The LWC Theatre Program will present The
Diviners by Jim Leonard Jr. and directed by Robert Brock at 7
p.m. CT Oct. 30-Nov. 1 and at 2 p.m. CT Nov. 3 in V.P. Henry
Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson St. For ticket information, contact
