COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College Assistant
Dean of Students Andy McAllister tells on a blog how he has
adjusted to living with type 1 diabetes since being diagnosed with
the disease in 2010.
McAllister recounts his story on the website Diabetes Stops
Here, a blog by the American Diabetes Association designed to help
stop diabetes.
McAllister, who was diagnosed with the disease at a local health
fair, writes that "educating myself about diabetes helps with any
struggles I face."
"Knowledge is power, and the more knowledge I gain proves that I
can maintain control," he writes.
Kentucky's rate for adults diagnosed diabetes is the
seventh highest in the nation, according to the Kentucky Cabinet for
Health and Family Services. About 9.9 percent of Kentucky
adults -- or 318,000 people -- have diabetes. The national rate is
7.5 percent.
