COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College
had a light schedule of classes this summer, but that has not meant
its A.P. White Campus has been a place of inactivity.
The campus has been the site of numerous camps, conferences
and meetings throughout the summer, adding to Columbia-Adair
County's tourism bottom line.
A total of 19 summer camps were scheduled for this summer at
LWC, meaning that at any given time 400 people are on campus. At
times this summer, almost 600 guests have been on campus -- most of
whom are from outside Columbia-Adair County.
One of the biggest summer events is EDGE, a one-day
orientation program for new LWC students. EDGE -- which stands for
education, development, growth and experience -- is a daylong
orientation program for incoming freshmen. The day introduces
freshmen to the LWC community and gives them several opportunities
to meet the college's faculty, staff and students. LWC holds a
total of five EDGE days during the summer.
The Kentucky YMCA will was in Columbia-Adair County as part
of its Kentucky Leadership Conference. The YMCA event
attracted about 300 kids -- from middle school to high
school.
Earlier in the summer, the Rodgers Explorers spent several
days on the A.P. White Campus. This year a total of 30 rising
ninth-graders from the region spent several days on campus where
they took classes and learned about leadership.
This summer has also featured plenty of sports-related camps.
Basketball camps were held in the Doris and Bob Holloway Health
& Wellness Center, a football camp was held at Blue Raider
Stadium and soccer camps are being held this week at Walter S.
Reuling Stadium.
LWC has also hosted several events for The United Methodist
Church. Earlier in the summer, three dozen men and women from the
region attended the United Methodist License for Pastoral Ministry
School, a program for aspiring ministers. And early this month,
several dozen women attended the annual School of Christian Mission
for the Women's Division of The United Methodist Church
