Alma Mater Lyrics Competition
A college's Alma Mater is its official anthem, a reflection of the institution's mission, tradition and spirit.  Lindsey Wilson College has a traditional anthem composed in 1949 when Lindsey was a junior college. This anthem is rarely performed and little known.  A school hymn was composed with the installation of Dr. William Luckey as President of the college. Our band performs a fight song at athletic competitions.
What is missing is the tradition of a school Alma Mater that is proudly remembered and sung at college functions and gatherings to instill unity, identity and commitment to our most valued ideals.  As part of our Lindsey Writes program, we want students, faculty, staff and alumni to get involved in writing lyrics for our Alma Mater Lyrics Competition. The winning lyrics should reflect both the proud tradition of more than a century of academic accomplishments as well as the commitment to continually evolving to meet the changing needs of students in our expanding academic programs and communities.
For the new alma mater, individuals or groups are invited to submit lyrics to Erin Wais-Hennen, director of Lindsey Writes, who will lead a selection committee comprised of faculty (including music), alumni, and student representatives. The committee will select the finalists and ultimately the winning entries, with students, faculty, staff and alumni voting on their favorite alma mater lyrics for each of those categories. The winning lyrics entry will be announced at a special celebration at 3 p.m.  Tuesday, Nov. 19 in the Cralle Student Union Building. There  will be $250 awards for the top student, alumni and faculty/staff entries.  At least three entries (determined by the selection committee) will become part of the songwriting competition sponsored by Lindsey Writes during spring 2014 that will set the lyrics to music. Plans are for the new alma mater to be unveiled with performances during Homecoming celebrations in fall 2014.
Submissions should represent original work and reflect the tradition, mission and educational experience of Lindsey Wilson College. Entries should be no more than approximately 100 words (2-3 stanzas are better than one long stanza, and you may include a chorus).  Lyrics should be submitted by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 as an attachment (Word file) to lindseywrites@lindsey.edu. Make sure to include your name and contact information and whether you are an alumni, student or faculty/staff in the email and on the lyrics entry.
All submissions to the Lindsey Wilson College Alma Mater Lyrics Competition become the property of Lindsey Wilson College.
